When was the last time you took a critical look at your LinkedIn page? Does it tell you where you come from or where you want to go? Do you only update your last job description or do you really have something interesting to mention on your online profile?
Performance versus Potential
We wrote earlier in our blog ‘Recruiter, do you know who you are hiring’ about the difference between performance and potential. Careers are changing at such a fast pace these days that recruiters are hiring people on potential rather than performance. It’s more interesting to develop potential skills instead of praising past achievements. What someone can bring to the table in the future seems to become more important than what someone has done in the past. How can you make sure your LinkedIn has the right setup?
Most people have their LinkedIn page set up on performance and not on potential. Doing so could mean that you just miss out on that one great job, even when you may have the potential! That’s why it’s important to redesign your LinkedIn, with a focus not only on performance, but also on potential! The following questions can help you with this:
- What kind of organization would I like to work with?
- What skills do I want to develop further?
- What do I want to show?
Sail to your dot on the horizon
Make your personal page as attractive as possible for your future employer. Of course it helps if you also show where you come from, but above all show where you want to go! Write in your profile text, for example, which topics play on your mind and where your interests lie, and ask for a recommendation about the skills and abilities you want to show to your (potential) new employer. Show your performance and potential, and who knows, you might find your dream job soon!
